The capital of a Tujia & Miao autonomous prefecture deep in the mountains between Chongqing and Wuhan — home to the karst towers of Enshi Grand Canyon and the impossibly clear “floating boat” water of Pingshan Canyon. Long hard to reach, now on the high-speed rail line and still refreshingly untouristed.

⏱️ First 24 hours

  • Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay and add a foreign card.
  • Buy a local SIM or activate an eSIM — you will need data in the gorges.
  • Book canyon tickets online a day or two ahead in summer.
  • Pack for mountains: rain layer, good shoes, and a dry bag for boat rides.

Getting around

High-speed rail reaches Enshi from Chongqing (~2.5h) and Wuhan (~4h), and there is a small airport. The Grand Canyon is about 1.5h from town by bus or car; Pingshan Canyon in Hefeng county is a longer 2.5–3h ride — consider a driver for the day or an overnight nearby.

Connectivity

Fine in the city, patchy in the canyons and on mountain roads. Download offline maps and your tickets before setting out.

Where to stay

Stay downtown near the old city or at the touristy-but-fun Tujia “Girls’ City” (女儿城) night market area; for an early canyon start, park-gate hotels work too.

Eat & drink

Tujia mountain food: zhangguan hezha (soybean-vegetable stew), cured bacon, sticky-rice baba cakes, and the local specialty — selenium-rich Enshi Yulu green tea, one of China’s oldest steamed teas.

Etiquette

This is the heartland of the Tujia people — locals are proud of their songs, dances and hand-waving festival culture. Be curious, and ask before photographing people in traditional dress.

Safety

Very safe. The real considerations are physical: long stair sections and cliff paths in the canyons, wet stone after rain, and winding mountain roads — leave buffer time.

📜 History

Deep in the Wuling mountains, Enshi was the land of the ancient Ba people and remains the heartland of the Tujia.

  1. Ancient

Home of the Ba people, ancestors of today’s Tujia, in the gorges of the Qing River.

  2. Yuan–Qing

Ruled for centuries by hereditary Tusi chieftains — the nearby Tangya Tusi city is now a UNESCO site.

  3. 1983

The Enshi Tujia & Miao Autonomous Prefecture is established.

  4. 2010s

High-speed rail arrives and photographers make Pingshan’s “floating boats” famous.

Top attractions

Enshi Grand Canyon 恩施大峡谷

Ēnshī Dàxiágǔ

A 108-km karst canyon of cliff-hugging plank paths and the “One Incense Pillar” — a 150-m rock needle balancing a pine tree on top.

Why it matters

As dramatic as Zhangjiajie but with a fraction of the foreign visitors — sheer limestone walls, waterfalls, and skywalks bolted to the cliff face. The One Incense Pillar (一炷香) is the icon: locals say it was an incense stick the gods left burning for the Tujia people.

Good to know

  • Two areas, one ticket: do the Yunlong Ground Seam (云龙地缝) first, then the Qixingzhai cliff loop — a full day with lots of stairs.
  • Book online a day ahead in summer; cable car up and the escalator save your knees.
  • About 1.5h from Enshi city — buses run from the tourist centre, or hire a driver.

Pingshan Canyon 屏山大峡谷

Píngshān Dàxiágǔ

A slot gorge in Hefeng county where the water is so clear that boats seem to float on air — the famous “flying boat” photo.

Why it matters

The viral image is real: in the narrow gorge the spring-fed water is transparent enough that a wooden boat casts its shadow on the riverbed and appears suspended mid-air. Once the moat of a Tusi chieftain stronghold, it stayed hidden until photographers made it famous.

Good to know

  • The boat ride is the whole point — in peak season (summer/holidays) book the boat slot with your entry ticket in advance rather than walking up.
  • Clarity is best on sunny days after a dry spell; midday light makes the “floating” effect strongest.
  • It's 2.5–3h from Enshi city — make it a full-day trip with a driver, or overnight in Hefeng and pair it with the Grand Canyon over two days.
