Pingshan Canyon

Overview

Deep in Hefeng county, Pingshan is a narrow slot canyon flooded with spring water of unreal clarity. In the right light a wooden boat casts its shadow onto the stones below and appears to hover mid-air — the photo that made the gorge famous across the Chinese internet. Boardwalks thread the cliff between boat sections, past falls and jade-green pools.

History

The plateau above the gorge was a stronghold of the Rongmei Tusi, the hereditary Tujia chieftains of Hefeng, who used the sheer canyon as a natural moat until the Qing court absorbed the region in 1735. The gorge stayed a local secret until viral 'floating boat' photographs in the 2010s turned it into one of Hubei's most wanted destinations.

Culture & religion

Pingshan is China's clear-water wonder in Tujia country: the same karst plumbing that carved Enshi's canyons filters rain into springs, and the result looks Photoshopped in person. For locals the gorge is tied to Tusi history — the 'kingdom in the clouds' whose moat you now float through — and to a quieter pride: this corner of Hubei kept its rivers clean enough to be famous for it.

Visiting

Go on a sunny day after a dry spell for maximum water clarity — midday light makes the floating effect strongest. The walk involves plenty of stairs between boat legs; allow 3–4 hours inside.

Tickets

Entry plus boat typically ¥150–230 (approximate — confirm officially). In summer and holidays book the boat time slot with your ticket in advance — walk-ups can sell out by morning.

Roughly 08:00–16:30 entry; the gorge may close after heavy rain (fast water, poor clarity).

Entrance → shuttle → descend to the gorge → boat leg 1 (the clear-water narrows) → boardwalk → boat leg 2 → climb out. 3–4 hours inside.

Getting there

About 2.5–3h by road from Enshi city (via Hefeng). Hire a driver for a long day trip, or overnight in Hefeng county town and arrive at opening.
