Skiing near Beijing: where to go in winter, what it costs, and how to book a ski or snowboard coach
✅ Updated Oct 2026
Beijing is one of the easiest big cities in the world for a ski day trip. The season runs from about late November or early December to early March, and there are two very different options. Ski inside Beijing (day trip, 1–2 hours): about a dozen resorts sit on the edge of the city. Nanshan (南山, Miyun) is the largest, with 26 runs and a free shuttle bus from Miyun Railway Station; it opened on 4 December in each of the last two seasons. Other popular choices are Vanke Shijinglong (万科石京龙, Yanqing), Jundushan (军都山, Changping, with night skiing) and Xishan (西山, Haidian), the closest to downtown, reachable on Metro Line 16. These are man-made-snow hills, good for beginners and a fun day, not for big-mountain skiing. Ski in Chongli (崇礼, real mountains, 1–1.5 hours by high-speed train): the 2022 Winter Olympics resorts are a short train ride away. Trains run from Beijing North or Qinghe Station to Taizicheng (太子城) for about ¥84–99, and Thaiwoo (太舞), Genting (云顶) and Wanlong (万龙) are a short shuttle from there. Thaiwoo is usually the easiest pick for beginners and families, Wanlong the favourite of strong skiers. Most visitors stay at least one night. What it costs: at Nanshan a weekday day ticket was about ¥210 and a weekend day ¥350, with night skiing from about ¥145; the ticket includes basic skis or a board, boots and poles, but not clothing, helmet, goggles or a locker. Chongli tickets cost more, especially at weekends and over New Year and Chinese New Year. Ski and snowboard coaches: lessons are priced the same for skis (双板) and snowboard (单板). At the Beijing hills a private one-to-one lesson is commonly about ¥200–450 per hour on weekdays and more at weekends; at Nanshan, for example, one-to-one snowboard teaching has been about ¥300 per hour on weekdays and ¥440 at weekends. In Chongli, Wanlong's official 2026–27 price for a 2-hour one-to-one lesson with a beginner-level coach is ¥800 on weekdays, ¥900 at weekends and ¥1,150 in peak season, with higher-level coaches costing more. Booking a second person into the same lesson (one-to-two) is much cheaper per head. Most resort coaches speak only Chinese, so if you want an English-speaking coach, or someone who also handles tickets, rental and the shuttle for you, book ahead. NihaoLife can find you a ski or snowboard coach. Tell us the resort or area, your dates, skis or snowboard, your level and how many people, and we will come back with a coach and a price before you pay anything. - 1
Pick a style: a Beijing hill such as Nanshan for an easy day trip, or Chongli (high-speed train to Taizicheng) for real mountains and an overnight stay.
- 2
Check the opening date: most Beijing resorts open in late November or early December, and weekends are much busier and more expensive than weekdays.
- 3
Buy the lift ticket online the day before (Trip.com works with foreign cards) and bring your passport — tickets are real-name.
- 4
Bring or rent ski clothes, a helmet and goggles: the basic ticket usually covers only skis or a board, boots and poles.
- 5
Book a coach for a first day on snow. Ask for skis (双板) or snowboard (单板), your level, and whether the coach speaks English.
