China is largely cashless, but keep some cash for small vendors. Withdraw RMB from ATMs (Bank of China, ICBC) with a foreign card and choose the local-currency option to avoid bad conversion. Exchange money at banks or the airport with your passport, and tell your home bank you are traveling so your card is not blocked.
