Face (面子): the key to Chinese social life

✅ Updated May 2026

Face (面子, miànzi) is a person's social standing, dignity, and reputation, and protecting it shapes almost every interaction. Praise people in front of others, but raise problems privately and never criticize someone publicly. Avoid blunt refusals — a soft "maybe" often means no. Giving face (给面子) through respect, deference, or a thoughtful gesture builds trust and smooths the way; causing someone to lose face can damage a relationship instantly.
