Can foreigners drive in China?

✅ Updated May 2026

International driving permits are not valid in mainland China — you need a Chinese driver's license. Short-term visitors can get a temporary license at some airports, while residents convert a foreign license by passing a written theory test (often available in English) at the vehicle administration office (车管所); a road test is usually not needed if you already hold a valid license. You will need your passport, proof of residence, a health check, and photos. In cities, most people rely on the metro, DiDi, and high-speed rail instead.

License rules vary by province and change over time. Confirm current requirements with the local vehicle administration office (车管所).
