Etiquette

This is Qu Yuan country — the Dragon Boat Festival is genuinely local here, honoring the ancient poet who drowned in protest. Expect real races in June.

Safety

Very safe and easygoing. On boats, follow crew instructions and mind wet decks; summer sun on the water is stronger than it feels.

Three Gorges Dam 三峡大坝

Sānxiá Dàbà

The world’s largest power station — a 2.3-km wall across the Yangtze, with a ship elevator that lifts whole vessels 113 m.

Why it matters

Whatever you think of mega-dams, standing on Tanziling Ridge watching ships ride a giant elevator over the Yangtze is jaw-dropping — modern China’s scale in a single view. It generates as much power as several nuclear plants.

Good to know

  • Bring your passport — the dam is a controlled zone with a mandatory visitor shuttle.
  • Tanziling Ridge is the classic panorama; the ship-lift viewpoint is the fun one.
  • Half-day trip ~1h from Yichang; combine with Xiling Gorge on the way back.

Three Gorges Tribe 三峡人家

Sānxiá Rénjiā

A folk-culture park inside Xiling Gorge: stilt houses over green water, waterfalls, and Tujia song-and-dance.

Why it matters

Staged, yes — but beautifully: girls washing silk by sampan, a mock Tujia wedding you can join, fishermen with cormorants under the cliffs. It photographs like old river China and makes the gorge landscape walkable.

Good to know

  • Wear shoes with grip — paths climb beside waterfalls.
  • The Tujia wedding show is the crowd-pleaser; check times at the gate.
  • Boats + walking take most of a day; bring water.

Xiling Gorge 西陵峡

Xīlíng Xiá

The longest of the Three Gorges — sheer cliffs over the Yangtze, and the stretch least changed by the dam.

Why it matters

Below the dam the river still runs at its natural level, so this is where the gorges look most like the classical paintings. Day cruises from Yichang thread the cliffs without committing to a multi-day Chongqing voyage.

Good to know

  • Short on time? A half/one-day Xiling cruise from Yichang beats skipping the gorges entirely.
  • Sit on the boat's upper deck; the light is best in the morning.
  • Pair with Three Gorges Tribe village inside the gorge.
