On the old Silk Road near Zhangye, this Danxia landform geopark is famous for hills banded in vivid stripes of red, orange, gold and blue-green — layer upon layer of mineral-rich sandstone tilted and eroded over millions of years. Boardwalks and a shuttle bus link several viewing platforms; the colours blaze at sunrise and sunset.
History
The bands are roughly 24-million-year-old sandstone and mineral layers, folded by tectonics and carved by wind and rain. The Hexi Corridor here was a key Silk Road passage; the geopark is now one of northwest China's signature sights and a favourite of photographers.
Culture & religion
Zhangye sits on the Hexi Corridor where Chinese, Tibetan, Mongol and Central Asian routes met along the Silk Road. The surreal striped landscape has become an emblem of China's northwest and of the country's geological wonders — best understood with the trade-route history that runs right past it.
