Zhangjiajie

Overview

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, the heart of the UNESCO-listed Wulingyuan area, is a labyrinth of roughly 3,000 sheer quartz-sandstone pillars rising hundreds of metres from misty ravines. China's first national forest park (1982), it's threaded with trails, cable cars, shuttle buses and the record-breaking Bailong glass elevator.

History

The landscape is the work of hundreds of millions of years of erosion on quartz-sandstone. Long known to the local Tujia people, it became China's first national forest park in 1982 and shot to global fame after its pillars helped inspire the floating 'Hallelujah Mountains' of the 2009 film Avatar — one peak was renamed in the film's honour.

Culture & religion

Zhangjiajie is the vertical world of Chinese ink painting made literal — the sublime, mist-wreathed peaks that artists imagined, standing in front of you. It is the homeland of the Tujia ethnic minority, with their own architecture, song and reverence for these mountains, and it embodies the shan-shui (mountain-water) ideal at the root of Chinese landscape art.

What to see

• Avatar Hallelujah Mountain (乾坤柱)

  The slender pillar that helped inspire Avatar's floating peaks — best when cloud drifts between the columns.

• Bailong Glass Elevator (百龙天梯)

  A 326 m glass lift bolted to a cliff face, whisking you up through the pillars — a Guinness record holder.

• Tianzi Mountain (天子山)

  A high ridge of viewpoints over endless seas of stone peaks and cloud.

• Golden Whip Stream (金鞭溪)

  A gentle valley walk along a clear stream beneath the towering pillars, with wild monkeys.

Visiting

Give it 1–2 full days — the park is huge. Use the cable cars, shuttle buses and glass elevator to cover ground, and wear proper shoes. The views depend on weather: cloud and mist make them magical, heavy rain hides them.

Tickets

A multi-day park ticket is around ¥225; the cable cars, glass elevator and Tianmen Mountain (separate) cost extra (approximate — confirm officially).

Opening hours

Roughly 07:00–18:00; cable cars and the elevator may close earlier. Seasonal variation applies.

Suggested route

Forest Park gate → Golden Whip Stream valley walk → Bailong elevator or Huangshizhai cable car up → Yuanjiajie (Avatar peak) → Tianzi Mountain viewpoints. A full day; stay overnight in/near the park for two.

Getting there

Zhangjiajie city has its own airport and high-speed-rail station; from there it's ~40 minutes by bus/car to the Forest Park gate or Wulingyuan gate.
