Overview

A 1,300-year-old canal town beside the Grand Canal, Wuzhen is the postcard of southern China: whitewashed houses with black-tiled roofs leaning over green canals, arched stone bridges, and workshops for indigo cloth and rice wine. It has two areas — Dongzha for a daytime visit, and the beautifully restored Xizha, magical when its canals light up at night.

History

A prosperous market town on the Grand Canal trade since the Tang and Song dynasties, Wuzhen was restored into a managed heritage town and is the birthplace of the modernist writer Mao Dun. It now also hosts the annual World Internet Conference.

Culture & religion

Wuzhen is the archetype of Jiangnan water-town life, where canals are the streets and refined merchant-scholar culture flourished. Its workshops keep alive crafts like indigo (blue-calico) dyeing, rice-wine brewing and shadow puppetry — the gentle 'small bridges, flowing water, households' ideal of classical Chinese poetry made real.

What to see

  • Xizha canals by night (西栅)

The restored western area, its waterways and bridges glowing with lanterns after dark — the signature scene.

  • Indigo dye workshop (蓝印花布)

Long banners of blue-and-white calico drying in the courtyards — Wuzhen's iconic image.

  • A wooden boat ride

Glide the canals as locals have for centuries, under the arched stone bridges.

  • Rice wine & shadow puppets

Taste the local rice wine at its old distillery and catch a traditional shadow-puppet show.

Visiting

Xizha is best for an evening or overnight (the lit canals are the highlight); Dongzha suits a half-day of workshops. Take a boat ride. Allow one to two days; very crowded on holidays.

Tickets
Roughly Dongzha ¥110, Xizha ¥150, or a combined ticket ~¥190 (approximate — confirm officially).
Opening hours
Dongzha ~07:00–17:30; Xizha stays open into the evening (~22:00) for the night views.
Suggested route
Xizha: enter by boat or footbridge → canal lanes and workshops → dinner → the lantern-lit night canals. Add Dongzha for daytime crafts.
