Wulong Karst

Overview

Wulong is one of the showpieces of the 'South China Karst' World Heritage site. Its centrepiece, the Three Natural Bridges (Tiansheng Sanqiao), is a trio of giant natural limestone arches spanning a deep green gorge, linked by two enormous sinkholes you descend into on foot. Nearby are the Furong Cave, the Houping sinkholes and the alpine meadows of Xiannü (Fairy) Mountain, making Wulong a full day or two of dramatic southwest-China scenery.

History

The bridges and sinkholes were carved over millions of years as underground rivers dissolved and collapsed the limestone. An old courier-road relay station, the Tianfu Inn, sits on the valley floor between the arches. Wulong was inscribed as part of the South China Karst World Heritage in 2007, and gained global fame as a filming location for Zhang Yimou's 'Curse of the Golden Flower' and Michael Bay's 'Transformers: Age of Extinction'.

Culture & religion

Wulong showcases the spectacular karst terrain that defines much of southwest China — the same geology that shapes Guilin and Guizhou. For visitors it reframes the region not through temples or cityscapes but through raw natural scale: standing on the valley floor, dwarfed by stone arches hundreds of metres high, is a reminder of how the land itself shaped settlement here.

• Three Natural Bridges (天生三桥)

  Three vast natural arches over a gorge, descended via glass-sided lifts and walkways.

• Tianfu Inn film set (天福官驿)

  The lone courier-station courtyard on the valley floor, used in 'Curse of the Golden Flower'.

• Xiannü (Fairy) Mountain (仙女山)

  High grassland and forest, cool in summer and snowy in winter — a popular escape from Chongqing's heat.

• Furong Cave (芙蓉洞)

  A richly decorated limestone cavern of stalactites and crystal formations.

Visiting

Take a lift down into the gorge and walk the loop between the bridges; allow a half-day for the bridges alone, or a full day or two to add Xiannü Mountain and Furong Cave. Lots of stairs — wear good shoes.

Tickets

The Three Natural Bridges scenic area is roughly ¥95 plus a shuttle fee; Furong Cave and Xiannü Mountain are ticketed separately (approximate — confirm officially).

Generally about 08:30–16:30 for last entry; check seasonal times.

Getting there

From Chongqing, take the high-speed or regular train to Wulong (about 2–2.5 hours), then a tourist bus or taxi to the scenic areas. Day tours from Chongqing are common.
