Set at about 1,900 m in the Bogda range of the Tianshan ('Celestial Mountains'), this glacial lake sits beneath the 5,445 m Bogda Peak, fringed by spruce forest and Kazakh yurts. Part of the UNESCO-listed Xinjiang Tianshan (2013), it is the most accessible slice of high mountain scenery from Ürümqi.
History
In Chinese myth the lake is the bathing place of the Queen Mother of the West (Xiwangmu), tying it to ancient legend and the Mid-Autumn tradition. Long a Kazakh pastoral area, it was developed into Xinjiang's signature easy mountain day-trip.
Culture & religion
Heavenly Lake blends Han mythology — the Queen Mother of the West and her peach banquet of immortality — with the living Kazakh nomadic culture of yurts, horses and milk tea. The Tianshan themselves are a spine of Central Asia and the Silk Road, so the lake is a gentle introduction to Xinjiang's mountain world and its peoples.
