Tian'anmen Square

Overview

Tian'anmen Square is one of the largest public squares in the world, a 44-hectare expanse laid out on Beijing's central axis directly south of the Forbidden City. It is framed by the Tian'anmen ("Gate of Heavenly Peace") to the north, the Great Hall of the People to the west, the National Museum of China to the east, and the Monument to the People's Heroes and the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall at its centre. For visitors it is usually the first stop before entering the Forbidden City just beyond the gate.

History

The Tian'anmen gate dates from 1420, the Ming-dynasty entrance to the imperial city. The open square took its modern form in the 1950s, when it was greatly enlarged as a stage for national ceremonies. It has been the backdrop to defining moments of 20th-century Chinese history and remains the setting for the daily flag-raising at dawn and lowering at dusk, timed to the sunrise and sunset.

Culture & religion

The square sits on the same north–south ceremonial axis as the Forbidden City — a deliberate line from imperial power to the modern state. Where emperors once issued edicts from the gate, the square today is the country's civic centre-stage. The dawn flag-raising by the honour guard draws crowds who arrive before sunrise; it is treated as a solemn patriotic occasion rather than a tourist show.

• National Museum of China (国家博物馆)

  On the east side — one of the world's largest museums, free with ID/passport booking.

Visiting

Security screening is required to enter the square — bring your passport, and expect airport-style checks and possible queues. Early morning is best (and the only time for the flag-raising). It pairs naturally with the Forbidden City, which you enter through the gate to the north.

Tickets

The square itself is free. The Chairman Mao Memorial Hall is free but has limited hours and long lines; the National Museum is free with advance booking. Bags are screened at entry.

Opening hours

The open square is generally accessible in daytime hours with security checks; the flag ceremonies track sunrise and sunset, so times shift through the year. Surrounding halls and museums keep their own hours and closures.

Suggested route

Enter via a security checkpoint → walk north up the square past the Monument to the People's Heroes → reach the Tian'anmen gate → continue through to the Forbidden City ticket gate. ~1 km, then half a day for the palace beyond.

Getting there

Subway Line 1 to Tian'anmen East or Tian'anmen West, or Line 2 to Qianmen at the south end. Much of the area is pedestrianised, so the metro is far easier than a taxi.
