Overview

A UNESCO site since 1997, Pingyao is the most complete ancient walled city in China: a ~6 km Ming-era wall encircling a grid of Ming and Qing courtyard streets, temples, guild halls and old shopfronts. It was the cradle of China's 'piaohao' draft-banking system — the Wall Street of its day.

History

Walled in 1370 under the Ming, Pingyao boomed in the Qing as China's banking capital: Rishengchang, the country's first draft bank, was founded here in 1823, and dozens of banks followed, financing trade across the empire. The town's fabric froze in time as that wealth moved on.

Culture & religion

Pingyao is a living time capsule of late-imperial Han urban life — the only fully intact ancient walled city, showing Ming-Qing town planning, the famous Shanxi merchant culture, and the very birth of modern Chinese finance. Courtyard mansions, guild temples and the old county yamen complete the picture.

What to see

  • The City Wall (古城墙)

Walk the ~6 km Ming rampart with its 72 watchtowers for the classic view over grey-tiled roofs.

  • Rishengchang, the first bank (日昇昌)

China's first draft bank (1823) — the birthplace of the country's banking system, now a museum.

  • Ming-Qing Street (明清街)

The old commercial spine, lined with restored shopfronts, banks and guild halls.

  • The County Yamen (县衙)

The well-preserved imperial county government office, with daily re-enactments.

Visiting

The whole walled town is walkable. Walk a stretch of the wall, then wander the lanes and museums. Allow one to two days; combine with the nearby Wang or Qiao family courtyard compounds.

Tickets
A through-ticket of around ¥125 covers the wall and ~20 sites inside (approximate — confirm officially).
Opening hours
The town is always open; ticketed sites run roughly 08:00–18:00 (shorter in winter).
Suggested route
South Gate → walk the City Wall → down Ming-Qing Street → Rishengchang bank → the County Yamen → courtyard mansions. One to two days.
