Mount Song is the central peak of the Five Sacred Mountains, but most visitors come for what stands on its slopes: the Shaolin Temple. The cluster of monuments around Dengfeng — Shaolin Temple, its Pagoda Forest, the ancient Songyue Pagoda and the Gaocheng observatory — was inscribed by UNESCO in 2010 as 'Historic Monuments of Dengfeng'.
History
Sacred for millennia, Songshan saw the Shaolin Temple founded in 495 CE; the Indian monk Bodhidharma is said to have brought Chan (Zen) Buddhism here and meditated nine years facing a cave wall. The temple became the legendary home of Shaolin martial arts, and the nearby Songyue Pagoda (523 CE) is China's oldest surviving brick pagoda.
Culture & religion
Many Chinese sites blend Buddhism, Daoism and Confucianism side by side — the “Three Teachings” (三教). Rather than one exclusive faith, Chinese tradition often weaves all three together.
Songshan is where the three teachings meet on one mountain: Buddhism at Shaolin (the cradle of Chan/Zen and kung fu), Confucianism at the ancient Songyang Academy, and Daoist and folk shrines besides. Shaolin fused meditation and martial discipline into a tradition now known worldwide — making this central peak one of the most culturally layered mountains in China.
