Just east of Qingdao, Mount Lao is the highest mountain on China's coastline, its granite peaks dropping dramatically into the sea. A national park and one of the cradles of Taoism, it is dotted with ancient temples — above all the Taiqing Palace — and famous for the pure spring water that gave Laoshan beer and mineral water their name.
History
Taoist priests have cultivated on Lao for some 2,000 years; the Taiqing Palace traces its origins to around 140 BCE, and Ming and Qing temples dot the slopes. Long a place of reclusion and immortality- seeking, it became a key mountain of the Quanzhen Taoist school.
Culture & religion
Daoism (Taoism) is China’s own native religion, centred on living in harmony with the Dao — “the Way” of nature. Its ideas shape yin-yang, tai chi and feng shui, and its temples often crown dramatic sacred mountains.
Lao is 'the first famous mountain on the sea' and one of Taoism's most important peaks — a landscape of cultivation, reclusion and the search for immortality, where mountain meets ocean. Its celebrated spring water ties the sacred mountain to Qingdao's modern fame for beer, a neat link between old and new China.
What to see
Taiqing Palace (太清宫)
The grand seaside Taoist temple complex at the mountain's foot — the spiritual heart of Lao.
Jufeng, the Great Peak (巨峰)
The 1,132 m summit area with sweeping views over sea and ridges.
Beijiushui valley (北九水)
A cool valley of pools and streams — the green, watery side of the mountain.
Sea-cliff scenery
Granite peaks plunging into the Yellow Sea, unlike any other sacred mountain.
Visiting
The mountain has several scenic areas (Taiqing, Yangkou, Beijiushui) linked by shuttle buses; pick one or two for a day trip from Qingdao. Combine sea views with temple visits; comfortable in spring–autumn.

- Roughly 06:00–17:00, varying by area and season.
- Suggested route
- Taiqing scenic area: the seaside Taiqing Palace and coastal paths → cable car or trail toward Jufeng for the summit views. A comfortable day trip.

Getting there
In Qingdao, Shandong. A bus or DiDi from the city reaches the Taiqing or Yangkou gates in ~1 hour. Qingdao has an airport and high-speed rail.
