Mount Hua

Overview

The western of the Five Sacred Mountains, Mount Hua is famed for sheer granite peaks and dizzying stairways cut into vertical rock. Its five peaks crown out at the 2,155 m South Peak; chains, narrow ridges and the notorious Plank Walk in the Sky make it a thrill as much as a pilgrimage. Cable cars now reach the North and West peaks.

History

A holy Taoist mountain for thousands of years, Hua drew hermits and immortality-seekers to its caves and temples, and pilgrims up its perilous stairs. In legend it is a stage for sword-masters; today cable cars and the harnessed plank walk also bring adventure tourists from around the world.

Culture & religion

Hua is the western sacred peak and one of the great centres of Taoism, associated with steepness, danger and the test of nerve. Its caves sheltered Taoist recluses seeking immortality, and martial-arts lore ('a duel atop Mount Hua') made it a byword for the ultimate contest. The vertiginous plank walk turns that symbolism into a literal leap of faith.

What to see

• Plank Walk in the Sky (长空栈道)

  Wooden planks bolted to a sheer cliff face — harnessed, optional, and one of the world's most frightening walks.

• North Peak (云台峰)

  The 'Cloud Terrace' peak reached by cable car; the gateway to the ridge walks.

• South Peak (落雁峰)

  The highest point at 2,155 m, with the Chess Pavilion clinging below.

• West Peak (莲花峰)

  The 'Lotus' peak, the most beautiful, reached by its own long cable car.

Visiting

Take a cable car (North or West peak) to start high, then walk the ridges between the peaks — steep, with chains and crowds at bottlenecks. The plank walk is a separate paid, harnessed add-on. A full day; some climb overnight for sunrise.

Entrance around ¥160; cable cars ¥80–140 each, plus the plank walk fee (approximate — confirm officially).

Opening hours

Roughly 07:00–19:00, with night access at times for sunrise; cable-car hours vary by season.

Visitor center → West Peak (or North Peak) cable car → ridge walk to South Peak (highest) → East Peak and the plank walk (optional) → North Peak → cable car down. Full day.

Getting there

In Huayin, Shaanxi. Huashan North high-speed-rail station is ~30–40 min from Xi'an; a shuttle runs to the visitor center and cable-car bases.
