Li River

Overview

The Li River winds about 83 km from Guilin to Yangshuo through a dreamscape of thousands of karst limestone peaks. The classic 4–5 hour cruise glides past bamboo groves, rice paddies, buffalo and cormorant fishermen; the bend at Xingping is the very view printed on China's ¥20 banknote.

History

The karst towers formed over more than 300 million years as rain dissolved an ancient seabed of limestone. For more than a thousand years poets and painters have called this 'the finest scenery under heaven', and the river cruise has long been the classic way to experience the landscape that defines southern China in the imagination.

Culture & religion

The Li River is the living original of shan-shui (mountain-water) painting — the misty peaks and still water of countless ink scrolls, here in three dimensions. It is also home to Zhuang and Yao ethnic cultures and the old craft of cormorant fishing, and it embodies the rural idyll that Chinese poetry has prized for centuries.

• Xingping & the ¥20 view

• Nine Horses Fresco Hill (九马画山)

  A cliff whose mineral streaks are said to form nine horses — a classic 'can you spot them?' stop.

• Yangshuo West Street (阳朔西街)

  The lively cruise-end town: cafés, bars, rock-climbing and biking through the countryside.

Visiting

The cruise is the headline — book the Guilin→Yangshuo boat (~4–5 h, departs mid-morning), or do a shorter bamboo raft from Xingping. Weather matters: clear or lightly misty days are magical. Spend the evening in Yangshuo.

Tickets

Full cruise tickets run roughly ¥215–450 depending on the boat class; the Xingping bamboo raft is ~¥100+ (approximate — confirm officially).

Opening hours

Cruises depart in the morning (typically ~09:00–10:30); rafts run through the day, weather permitting.

Suggested route

Board near Guilin → cruise downstream past the karst peaks and Xingping → disembark at Yangshuo → West Street and countryside. A full day end to end.

Getting there

Guilin has an airport and high-speed rail. Cruise piers are at Zhujiang/Mopanshan south of Guilin; or take a bus to Xingping or Yangshuo for shorter rafts.
