Kanas Lake

Overview

Tucked into the Altai Mountains near where China, Mongolia, Russia and Kazakhstan meet, Kanas is a deep glacial lake famed for water that changes colour with the season and the weather. Taiga forest, snow peaks and the log villages of the Tuvan people surround it, and local legend tells of a lake monster in its depths.

History

A remote frontier lake long home to Tuvan (a Turkic people) and Kazakh herders, Kanas was opened as a national nature reserve and scenic area and has become the symbol of Xinjiang's wild, forested north — a world away from the deserts most associate with the region.

Culture & religion

Kanas is a window into Xinjiang's nomadic, multi-ethnic world: Tuvan log-cabin villages like Hemu and Baihaba, Kazakh herders moving with the seasons, and Mongolian heritage, all far from Han heartland China. It shows the country's enormous cultural range, and its blazing autumn forests are legendary among Chinese photographers.

What to see

• Kanas Lake & Fish-Viewing Deck (观鱼台)

  Climb to the ridge-top pavilion for the classic view down the whole curving, colour-shifting lake.

• Moon Bay (月亮湾)

  A crescent bend in the Kanas River, the most photographed spot in the valley.

• Sleeping Dragon Bay (卧龙湾)

  A calm river bend with a dragon-shaped sandbar in the middle.

• Hemu Village (禾木村)

  A picturesque Tuvan village of log houses, magical under autumn gold or morning mist.

Visiting

Best in late September for autumn colour, or in summer. It's remote and cold even in summer — bring layers. Get in by flight to Kanas/Altay or a long drive, then use the in-park shuttle buses. Plan 1–2 days; some areas close in deep winter.

Around ¥185 plus a shuttle-bus fee of ~¥120+ inside the scenic area (approximate — confirm officially).

Opening hours

Roughly 07:00–19:00 in season; partly closed in deep winter. Seasonal variation is significant.

Jiadengyu transfer center → shuttle to Kanas Lake and the Fish-Viewing Deck → Moon Bay and Sleeping Dragon Bay along the river → overnight in Hemu village for sunrise. 1–2 days.

Getting there

Far north Xinjiang. Fly to Kanas Airport or Altay, or take a long-haul bus/car from Ürümqi, then transfer at Jiadengyu to the in-park shuttles.
