Jiuzhaigou Valley

Overview

Jiuzhaigou ('Nine Villages Valley') is a Y-shaped alpine valley — a UNESCO site since 1992 — famous for multicoloured mineral lakes, layered travertine waterfalls and snow peaks, all linked by boardwalks and green shuttle buses. The water's jewel tones come from carbonate deposits and algae.

History

Long home to nine Tibetan villages, the valley was made a nature reserve in 1978 and a World Heritage site in 1992. A 2017 earthquake damaged some sites; after restoration it reopened and remains one of China's most beloved natural parks.

Culture & religion

Jiuzhaigou is where extraordinary karst-travertine nature meets living Tibetan and Qiang culture — prayer flags, water mills and village legends frame the lakes. It distils the Chinese love of pristine mountain-water scenery, and its blazing autumn reflections are among the country's most photographed sights.

What to see

• Five Flower Lake (五花海)

  The signature lake — a shallow pool of turquoise, jade and gold over fallen tree trunks.

• Nuorilang Waterfall (诺日朗瀑布)

  A 320 m-wide curtain of water, the valley's grandest falls and a transfer hub.

• Long Lake (长海) & Five-Colour Pond

  The highest, deepest lake at the valley's top, with the vivid little Five-Colour Pond nearby.

• Pearl Shoal Falls (珍珠滩瀑布)

  Water skipping over travertine like strings of pearls — a famous filming location.

Visiting

It's a big park: take the shuttle bus to the top, then walk the boardwalks downhill between sights, hopping the bus as needed. Allow a full day; you're at high altitude, and autumn (October) is the spectacular peak — and the busiest.

Around ¥169 entrance plus ~¥90 for the shuttle bus, varying by season (approximate — confirm officially; daily numbers are capped).

Opening hours

Roughly 07:00–17:00, shorter in low season. Book ahead in peak periods.

Suggested route

Shuttle to the top (Long Lake / Five Flower Lake) → walk boardwalks down past Pearl Shoal and Nuorilang → the lower Shuzheng lakes → exit. A full day.

Getting there

Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport is ~1.5 h away; otherwise it's a long (8–10 h) but scenic drive or bus from Chengdu.
