Hongya Cave

Overview

Hongya Cave is an eleven-storey complex built into a riverside cliff where the Jialing River meets the Yangtze, in the heart of Chongqing. Its tiered, timber 'diaojiaolou' (stilted houses) recreate traditional Bayu mountain architecture, packed with shops, snack stalls, teahouses and restaurants. After dark it lights up in warm gold, drawing comparisons to the bathhouse in the film 'Spirited Away' and turning it into one of China's most photographed night-time scenes.

History

The site recalls the historic Hongya Gate, one of old Chongqing's city gates, and the cliff-clinging stilted houses that once lined the rivers — a vernacular response to the city's steep, flood-prone terrain. The current complex was redeveloped in the 2000s as a folk-culture and dining destination, and exploded in popularity in the late 2010s through short-video apps, becoming a symbol of Chongqing's 'magic 8D city' reputation.

Culture & religion

Hongya Cave captures Bayu culture's defining instinct: when there is no flat land, build upward and outward over the slope. Entering on one street and leaving eleven floors later onto a different street at a different elevation is the quintessential Chongqing experience, where 'ground floor' is a slippery idea. It is also a window onto modern Chinese internet tourism — a place made famous, and perpetually crowded, by viral video.

What to see

• The golden night view

  From around dusk the whole cliff face lights up gold — the must-see, best from the bridge opposite.

• Stilted-house architecture

  Eleven tiers of traditional diaojiaolou clinging to the cliff, connected by a maze of stairs and walkways.

• Multi-level street trick

  Enter on the riverside level and ride up to exit onto a road eleven floors higher — only-in-Chongqing geography.

• Street food & hotpot

  Floors of Chongqing snacks and bubbling mala hotpot inside the complex.

Visiting

Come in the late afternoon, explore the floors, then position yourself across the river for the lights. Expect big crowds, especially on weekends and holidays. Allow two to three hours.

Tickets

Entry to the complex is free; you pay only for food and shops.

Opening hours

Open roughly 11:00–23:00; the exterior lights typically run until about 22:00.

Suggested route

Enter at the riverside level → work up through the food and craft floors → exit at the top onto Cangbai Road → cross to the Qiansimen bridge area for the photo. About two to three hours.

Getting there

Metro to Xiaoshizi (Line 1) or Linjiangmen (Line 2), then a short walk. Taxis and Didi are easy, but traffic is heavy at night.
