Gulangyu Island

Overview

A short ferry from Xiamen, Gulangyu is a small, car-free island crammed with late-19th and early-20th-century architecture — European, Southeast-Asian and Min-Nan styles side by side — plus gardens, churches and a famous musical heritage. A UNESCO site since 2017, it's known as 'Piano Island' for its long love of Western classical music.

History

Opened as an international settlement after 1843, Gulangyu filled with consulates, churches, schools and the villas of wealthy returned overseas Chinese, giving it an unusually cosmopolitan built heritage. That mix, and its musical tradition, earned it World Heritage status as a 'historic international settlement'.

Culture & religion

Gulangyu is a rare meeting point of cultures: Min-Nan (Hokkien) roots, the wealth and taste of returned overseas Chinese, and Western colonial influence, all on one small island. Its piano and organ museums and concert tradition make music part of the place's identity.

What to see

• Sunlight Rock (日光岩)

  A seaside garden built over the water, home to a remarkable collection of antique pianos.

  One of the world's largest collections of pipe and reed organs, fitting for 'Piano Island'.

Visiting

Take the tourist ferry from Xiamen (book ahead — locals and visitors use different piers). The island is entirely on foot; get pleasantly lost in the lanes. A half to full day, or stay overnight after the day-trippers leave.

Tickets

The ferry is ~¥35 round trip; a combined ticket for the main sites (Sunlight Rock, Shuzhuang Garden, museums) is ~¥100 (approximate — confirm officially).

Opening hours

The island is always open; ticketed sites run roughly 07:30–17:30; ferries run on a schedule.

Ferry over → Sunlight Rock viewpoint → Shuzhuang Garden & Piano Museum → wander the villa lanes → ferry back. Half to full day.

Getting there

From Xiamen (airport + high-speed rail), tourists take the ferry from the Dongdu/International Cruise terminal (~20 min) rather than the locals' downtown pier — check which pier your ticket uses.
