Chengdu Panda Base

Overview

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is a large, garden-like reserve on the city's northern edge where dozens of giant pandas — plus red pandas — live in leafy, bamboo-filled enclosures. It is both a serious conservation and breeding institute and Chengdu's single most popular attraction, laid out along shaded walking paths through bamboo groves. Pandas are most active in the cool of the morning, so an early start is the difference between watching them eat and play and finding them fast asleep.

History

Founded in 1987 with six pandas rescued from the wild, the base has grown into one of the most successful captive-breeding programmes in the world, credited with helping pull the giant panda back from the brink. Its research underpins much of what is known about panda reproduction and cub-rearing.

Culture & religion

The giant panda is China's national treasure and a global symbol of wildlife conservation — and Sichuan is its heartland. For many visitors the base is the emotional highlight of a China trip; it is also the spiritual home of Chengdu's easy-going, panda-loving city identity.

What to see

• Cub nursery (熊猫幼儿园)

  The moon-nursery where the youngest cubs tumble and climb — the crowd favourite, busiest mid-morning.

• Morning feeding

  Pandas are lively and eating in the cooler early hours; by midday most are asleep. Arrive at opening.

• Red pandas (小熊猫)

  Often roaming near their enclosures along the paths — smaller, russet, and endearing.

• Bamboo-forest paths

  The whole reserve is a pleasant shaded walk; wear comfortable shoes.

Visiting

Go as early as you can — ideally at opening — for active pandas and the cub nursery; by midday they mostly sleep. Allow 3–4 hours. It's large and green, so comfortable shoes help; electric shuttles run the main loop. Book entry ahead in peak season/holidays.

Tickets

Entry around ¥55 (approximate — confirm officially); book via the official WeChat/website with your passport, especially at weekends and holidays. Beware unofficial resellers.

Roughly 07:30–18:00 (last entry earlier). Confirm current hours before you go.

Enter → cub nursery early while pandas are active → adult enclosures → red pandas → bamboo paths and lake. 3–4 hours; morning is essential.

Getting there

Metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue (熊猫大道), then a short bus/taxi; or a direct taxi/DiDi from central Chengdu (~30–40 min). Go at opening to beat both crowds and the midday nap.
